Introducing DNV GL
Similar to Intertek, Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and Germanischer Lloyd (GL) is the result of a conglomeration of several companies. In 2013 DNV and GL merged to form one of the biggest Testing, Inspection and Certification (TIC) companies. The ownership of the new company is split, 63.5% is owned by the Det Norsek Veritas Foundation and 36.5% by Mayfair Vermoegensverwaltung.
The history of both companies goes back to the 19th century, however DNV was founded first. In 1864 DNV was founded in Norway and focused on technical inspections and the evaluation of merchant vessels. Only three years later, in 1867, the Germanischer Lloyed was founded in Hamburg. A group of around 600 ship owners, ship builders and insurers invested in maritime inspection services.
Now joined, DNV GL is one of the major companies in the classification business. Worldwide a network of 300 offices in 100 countries offers the services of the group. Nevertheless, they are also involved in risk management for other industries such as oil and gas, electric power, petrochemicals, aviation, automotive, finance, food and beverage, healthcare and information technology are examples of services the company offers.
